Founded in 1945 as the Atlanta Youth Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra changed to its current name in 1947. The orchestra became a full time orchestra in 1967, and began performing internationally soon after.
In 1978, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra became the first orchestra to make a commercial digital recording, and the orchestra began working with Deutsche Grammophon to record works by composer Osvaldo Golijov, as well as recording under the Telarc label. This work earned the orchestra several Grammy Awards.
