Movimiento Popular translates literally to ‘popular movement’ which in Latin American countries means a grass-roots movement of or supported by the people. It is this attitude that best sums up the last few years of Grupo Fantasma’s impressive existence. The band has avoided categorization and trends to become a completely independent musical force with which to be reckoned. Their first eponymous self-released album moved over 7,000 copies from the stage alone and landed them on internationally distributed compilations, a NPR special, and the soundtrack to critically acclaimed director John Sayles’ film Casa de los Babys. Their explosive live performances have packed some of the most reputable venues in the US and Mexico on word of mouth and industry hype alone.
