Domestic Problems is a rock band from Michigan. The story of Domestic Problems (DP) is one that started over a decade ago in a cramped college dorm room in Grand Rapids, Mich. Inside that dorm room, a friendship was forged that became the backbone of a band that would go on to release seven independent albums, perform at world famous venues and tour in excesses of 200 shows a year.
Andy Holtgreive and Bill Kenny forged a friendship long before they were playing music together. In the beginning, each pursued music in his own way. Kenny spent time in a jazz band, refining his talent on the trumpet while Holtgreive focused on writing and performing. It took three years for the pair to decide to combine their efforts in a college talent show.
Quick successes pushed them into a battle of the bands that soon led to an opening slot at a local bar. That opening slot opened the door for the group to become the bar's Wednesday night house band. With a handful of original songs, this musical collective began to grow both in dynamic and scope. As members were added, a name had to be decided upon. The duo dubbed their creation "Domestic Problems," after a favorite Blues Brothers quote. DP performed its first official paying gig in 1992 at Martini's in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The band's infectious music and catchy lyrics earned them legions of fans. With Holtgreive and Kenny always at the helm, DP built a fan base that extended first across the state, and then across the region and beyond. They released "Scattered Pieces," the band's debut CD, in 1996. One critic dubbed the record "a debut CD with depth and talent."
In the years since "Scattered Pieces," DP has released six additional albums of original material. 1997's "Play" was lauded as "more fun than a garage full of monkeys and Mountain Dew" by critic John Serba of the Grand Rapids Press. In 1999, the band released its first ever live CD. The disc came as a result of a sold out performance at the Kalamazoo State Theatre only two months prior. As with DP's previous releases, "Live" was met with rave reviews.
