The Oakland Athletics fought through a long list of injuries to finish second in the American League West. Mark Ellis rebounded from injury and led the team with a .316 batting average. Eric Chavez earned another Gold Glove at third base and slugged 27 homers with 91 RBIs to pace the squad in both categories. Ace left-hander Barry Zito regained his Cy Young form for much of the year. Despite not making the playoffs, the Oakland Athletics showed much promise, and its pitching staff got plenty of seasoning.
