The Seagull is a play written in 1896 by Anton Chekhov. It centers on the romantic and artistic conflicts between the ingenue Nina, the actress Irina Arkadina, her son, playwright Konstantin Treplyov, and story writer Trigorin.
The first performance of The Seagull, in 1896 in St. Petersburg, was a famous failure, with the leading lady losing her voice, and a hostile, and vocal audience who booed the production. Later performances, however, proved incredibly popular.
