Ruben Studdard is a pop/R&B/gospel singer who rose to fame as winner of the second season of the American Idol television program. He was the first male and first African American to hold this title.
His debut album Flying Without Wings debuted at the number 2 position on the Billboard charts. His sophmore album, Soulful, debuted at number 1, selling over a million copies before it was even released. The single "Sorry 2004" from this album found substantial airplay, reaching number 9 in the Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 on the Billboard R&B singles chart. The song "Superstar" earned him a Grammy nomination. His third album, I Need an Angel debuted at number 1 on the Billboard gospel charts and reached number twenty on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
