The Black Angels is an indie rock band from Austin, Texas, formed in May 2004. Their name derives from the Velvet Underground song "The Black Angel's Death Song". They are much like a modern version of psychedelic bands like the 13th Floor Elevators and The Velvet Underground. They invite their audience to “Turn on, tune in, and drone out.”
They really blew the audience away at SXSW 2006. Since then there has been no turning back. They released their first album Passover (2006). It is an amazing document. They recently played the west coast and left audiences wanting more. They have found kindred spirits in bands such as The Warlocks and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Anton Newcombe has performed with The Black Angels.
